For so many years this cultural icon, the kombi, was a symbol of freedom – a method of escaping the daily grind and taking off on an adventure. Driving a kombi, you’d wave at other kombi drivers with a knowing nod that life was good. Fast forward to today and our streets are sadly lacking the simple curves of the kombi, the deep rumble of an air-cooled motor reverberating from its sensible location at the rear of the bus. Kombis now have a beer keg sticking out the side, they are permanently parked in the courtyard of backpacker hostels and brides ride in perfectly restored and polished kombis on their way to tie the knot. The day of the kombi has passed – they are definitely an endangered species – but the magic lives on…in this t-shirt!
